Three club members have had lots of fun over the last few weeks knitting hats for new-born babies in Ukraine. An initiative led by Rotarians in Newbury and in partnership with the International Rotary Fellowship of Healthcare Professionals, this has been a reminder that there are many small ways in which we can use our Rotary networks to make a difference.
As explained on the Newbury Rotary Facebook page “Sadly, with winter temperatures dropping and power outages affecting hospitals, Ukraine has become a frozen war. So we are re-launching our appeal for knitted baby hats, and 560 knitted hats are already on their way to Ukraine. This small act of care — a hat made by hand — offers warmth, comfort, and hope to families facing unimaginable hardship.”
Our 44 hats were in that delivery of 560 hats, and over the last few years thousands of hats have been sent. Rotarians and friends in Ukraine then add these to care packs for new mothers. A small gift but a reminder that many around the globe are still wanting to help those in need in Ukraine.
And our knitters? Well Carol and Becky both know what they are doing and so made great progress in a short time. Me? Well I’m a beginner knitter and managed two hats. Then I moved onto crochet at which I’m very slightly more competent. Moving from one row to the next wasn’t the tidiest though hence the heart decorations!
