Mavka the Spirit of the Forest – a gift to Faringdon

One of our club members attended the recent event at which Ukrainians thanked the town for its support of them over the last two years.

Gordon explained that it had been a lovely event at which a wooden statue of Mavka was presented to the Mayor and members of the town council. Mavka is a female spirit in Ukrainian folklore, known as the spit of the forest. Guests were entertained by a Ukrainian violinist and invited to imagine themselves in a dark forest standing alongside Mavka who would protect them.

The statue will soon be relocated to the Faringdon Folly, to stand next to the storytelling chair. The chair which was part funded by our Rotary club!
