Rotary Club of Faringdon and District Visits Brimstone Farm

The Rotary Club of Faringdon and District recently enjoyed a memorable visit to Brimstone Farm, where members were warmly welcomed by the farmer, Becci Berry, and her daughter.

Becci led the group on a walk around the farm, explaining that the central ethos of Brimstone Farm is to improve the land and leave it in a better condition for future generations. While this principle may sound straightforward, she described how it requires a great deal of science and careful management. Crops are planted with soil health in mind, hedges are positioned and managed to provide natural habitats, and just the right amount of shade is created for the cattle that form the heart of the farm.

The herd of beef cattle is reared with a passion and commitment to welfare that is second to none. Their health and wellbeing are plain to see and are reflected in lower veterinary and medication bills. Becci’s reputation for high quality and sustainable farming is recognised by some of the most prestigious supermarkets in the United Kingdom who are among her clients.

In addition to running the farm, Becci takes part in research programmes with universities and agricultural institutions both in Britain and abroad. These studies explore subjects such as soil health, root development and biodiversity, and include surveys of wildlife ranging from beetles to snails. This work places Brimstone Farm at the forefront of innovative and environmentally responsible farming.

Education and outreach form another important strand of Becci’s mission. She believes passionately in making the countryside accessible and in helping young people to understand the importance of protecting and improving the natural environment. Through a range of school visits and practical learning experiences, children are able to see farming in action and to appreciate the value of good stewardship of the land.

After the farm walk, members gathered in the education centre for a question and answer session. This lively discussion was accompanied by tea, coffee and delicious homemade cakes generously provided by Becci and her daughter.

Club President Mohinder thanked them both for their kindness and for the opportunity to learn more about the inspiring work at Brimstone Farm. He remarked that the Rotary Club would look at ways to support the educational aims and objectives of the farm in the future. The visit left members with a strong sense of admiration for Becci’s vision, her energy and her determination to combine farming with care for the land, the animals and the wider community.
