Kate Myrie, Co-Founder of Sustainable Shrivenham, gave an excellent talk to our Rotary Club last night. It was a community case study – the Sustainable Shrivenham Story.
As a Mum with a young family Kate explained her early vision and motivation for setting up Sustainable Shrivenham (3 years ago) and her journey so far helping to raise awareness of environmental issues, and promoting sustainable choices across our community. Kate and her co-founder, Kate Mortiboy, have received the Prime Minister’s Points of Light Award for service to their community, and for making Shrivenham a “Green Beacon” for recycling and waste reduction.
Sustainable Shrivenham seeks to make this community the first in England with zero waste. Kate’s key messages resonated well with our Rotarians, who were mindful that Rotary International’s 7th Focus Area (The Environment) needs to be translated into effective projects at Club level. She encouraged us to “think Globally, but act Locally”; and explained that it’s not good enough to just talk about global warming; we all have a responsibility to do something about it. And everybody can do something, however small, to reduce our impact on the environment, making our Planet a better place for generations to come.
